Human migration was a dynamic historical phenomenon that caused the birth, growth and often decline and decay of civilisations. Migration is still an unending process throughout the world that reshapes societal foundations, political and cultural patterns and economic structures. A comparable scenario occurred in twentieth-century Kerala, with the influx of people, predominantly farmers from Travancore to Malabar, induced by economic imperatives that played a pivotal role in the making of modern Malabar. As we stand at the centenary of this significant event of Malabar migration, it becomes an intellectual and social necessity to look back at the milestones of economic growth and social and cultural transformations in the path of migration and to examine the present exigencies of farmers in Malabar. A retrospective assessment of the past century offers crucial insights into evolving challenges pertinent to addressing contemporary concerns in the economy, society, polity, and culture of twenty-first century Malabar.
Against this backdrop, Nirmalagiri Educational Society for Sciences and Humanities, in academic collaboration with IRISH, the research centre of Kannur University, and the Departments of Economics, History, Malayalam and English of Nirmalagiri College, announces a two-day “National Seminar on Malabar Migration: Centennial Reflections” (19-20 January 2027), which will provide a platform for comprehensive discourse on the past, present, and future trajectories of Malabar migration.
