Mental health and well-being are essential foundations for quality, inclusive and equitable education. Across the world, students, teachers and education communities continue to face increasing challenges related to stress, anxiety, depression, burnout, due to various factors including bullying, discrimination, conflict, climate change, displacement, exclusion and lack of safe learning environments among others. These challenges particularly affect young people, girls, LGBTIQ+ communities, persons with disabilities, Indigenous learners, refugees and other vulnerable groups, as well as teachers.

This topic also appears as one of the main priorities and concerns of young people in the preliminary findings of a UNESCO youth survey for the development of a Youth Agenda for Education beyond 2030.

On the occasion of the World Mental Health Day 2026, the SDG 4 Youth & Student Network is hosting a Youth dialogue on mental health & well-being in education to create a safe and inclusive global platform for sharing experiences, challenges, innovative practices, policy solutions and young people’s practices and commitments to strengthen mental health and well-being within education systems.

The dialogue will contribute to shaping the education agenda that will replace SDG 4 beyond 2030. In fact, the workshop results will feed the ongoing youth survey and consultations process aimed at drafting a Post-2030 Youth Education and Learning Agenda.
